OBITUARY, Cliff Wakeham
It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of a long-standing
member and dear friend, Cliff Wakeham, barely a year after the death of his
wife, Mary.
He had suffered ill health for some years and had to move to a care home.
Luckily his new home on Barry Island had a wonderful view of the Bristol Channel
and Jackson's Bay where he and Mary had spent many happy days, and once he
acquired a scooter he was often to be seen bombing around Barry, recognisable by
the distinctive shock of white hair and the glint in his eyes - not even a
stroke could hold him back!
A lifelong resident of Barry, his interests were many and varied and included
local history and archaeology, bowls, dancing, music and choral singing, as well
as an infectious enthusiasm for Flat Holm that led to him recruiting, training
and organising the team of Tour Guides in recent years. Once, while in their
seventies, he and Mary even spent Christmas week on the island as volunteer
Wardens, to give the staff a break. He had an amazing zest for life, and was
always ready with an amusing and informative anecdote. His contribution to the
life of the Society was immense, and he will be greatly missed by all.
