Hi there!

Welcome to the Flat Holm Newsletter of 2005. It has been fun putting it together; we hope you enjoy the articles and they whet your appetite to visit the island again this year - maybe on one of our Long Working Days or as a new volunteer Tour Guide!

If you have any suggestions or articles for future Newsletters please contact us via the Secretary.

We reserve the right to edit or omit articles submitted.

Once we again, we would like to thank Admiral Insurance for their continued support of the Flat Holm Project and assistance in the production of this newsletter.

From our Secretary:

Looking back on 2004 we seem to have had more than our fair share of bad weather, and a number of day trips and specialist long days had to be cancelled. On the plus side, our Society Long Working Days were a success and enjoyed by both workers and artists. As usual, numbers of participants were low; we only had a handful of artists on the 4th July, the initial enthusiasm waning as time went on and the weather forecast deteriorated, so that my worry of having too many changed to a worry of having too few to actually complete the work that Guy had identified.

Other activities included a quiz night at the Mount Sorrel and a joint evening with the Barry Radio Society which proved to be both entertaining and informative. It is hoped that the slides shown on the night will be available on CD at some time in the future. Of the funds raised by the Society I was very pleased to "win" £100 simply by returning a questionnaire to the Vale Centre for Voluntary Services. Members of the Society were featured in the BBC Radio 4 programme Open Country recorded on the island in the summer.

For 2005 we hope to have a presence at the Vale Show, Penarth Festival and Barry Scout Fete. These dates are not yet finalised and so we will send out reminders to all of you who have participated in Society events over the last few years. Sad to say the list amounts to only forty or so names, so if you are interested, send us a stamped/addressed envelope (or e-mail) and we will contact you to remind you of events taking place in the near future. Once we have your name on file, you will be reminded until you stop coming.

There is limited space for artists on our Long Days. However, the Project also runs specific long days for art, photography and Yoga.
