All these include tuition and an excellent lunch - details from the Project Office. This year there are over 80 day visits scheduled. You are all welcome as paying visitors (£13.50) but would be more welcome as Tour Guides. We have six or seven regular guides. We could always do with more, especially those who are able to lead on weekdays. If you are interested call Gillian on 01446-733536

Our website is better than ever thanks to our webmaster Dave Price, details of sailings are already posted up on: www.flatholm.co.uk Due to circumstances beyond my control, I have to temporarily (I hope) give up the Secretary's job, so for the next few months contact Bridget by phone on 01446-406604 or by e-mail at b.box2@ntlworld.com

The View from the Pier Head

Here are some of the highlights of the year from the Project Officer.

Personnel
Morwenna
Harris left the post of Project Assistant in November when Tracey returned from maternity leave. Tracey's return is only temporary for three months and we are currently in the process of recruiting a permanent full time Project Assistant. At present we have three volunteers who are settling into island life very well and who hope to stay with us until the spring or summer.

Grants
Last year the Project was successful in being awarded an Adfwyio grant, joint funded by the Wales Tourist Board, the Welsh Assembly and the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW). Implementation of the grant involved the production of a splendid new guide book outlining the history and ecology of the island and five pocket guides: lighthouse, first military occupation, second military occupation, plants and birds. A sixth guide on geology and landscape was funded by CCW. The direction signs to the Project Office, on Barry Island, which were also funded, look very smart and have proved useful. In addition a professional set of exhibition boards are proving invaluable at exhibitions and shows. A panelled interpretive historical display which has been erected in the barracks has been linked to an educational activity for schools.

A grant was secured from the CCW Countryside Programme last year and progress is being made on producing an audio tape experience for people who can't visit the island. The tape will be mailed out to various appropriate organisations and will hopefully be accessible at local libraries. In addition we are producing an interactive CD ROM which will be provided to schools
